Set default splits for groups
The #1 requested feature for couples is here
If you're a couple splitting expenses based on income (70-30, 65-35, or any custom ratio), you know the pain of setting the same split percentages every single time you add a new expense. We heard you loud and clear – this was the top requested feature in our feedback forms, and we're thrilled to announce it's now live!
Default splits let you set your preferred expense split once, and it automatically applies to every new expense in that group. No more repetitive clicking, no more forgetting to adjust the split – just consistent, automatic splitting that matches how you actually share expenses.
What are default splits?
Default splits are preset sharing configurations that automatically apply when you create new expenses in a group. Whether you split expenses equally, by percentage (like 70-30), or by custom shares, you can now define this once and have it apply to all future expenses.
This premium feature solves one of the biggest friction points in expense tracking – having to manually set the same split configuration over and over again. It's especially powerful for:
- Couples who split based on income ratios (70-30, 60-40, etc.)
- Roommates with consistent utility or rent arrangements
- Friend groups with standard sharing patterns
How it works
Setting up and using default splits is simple:
Step 1: Access group settings
Click the edit button on your group to access settings, then click "Create default splits".
Step 2: Configure your default split
Choose your split type (equal, percentage, or shares) and set up your preferred ratios. For couples, this might be 70-30 based on income.
Step 3: Create expenses with auto-applied defaults
When you create a new expense in this group, you'll see "Default split applied" – your configured split is automatically set. You can still override it for special cases.
That's it! Your default split will now apply to all new expenses in this group.
Premium feature with smart access
Default splits are available exclusively to premium users, but we've designed the feature to work seamlessly in mixed groups:
Premium users can:
- Create and edit default splits
- Delete existing defaults
- Have defaults automatically applied to their new expenses
Free users can:
- See the default splits in their groups
- Benefit when premium members create expenses with defaults
- Upgrade anytime to unlock full access
This approach ensures groups work smoothly regardless of who has premium, while rewarding our premium subscribers with powerful time-saving features.
Perfect for modern couples
The most common use case we've seen is couples who split expenses proportionally based on income. If you earn $70k and your partner earns $30k, splitting everything 50-50 isn't fair – a 70-30 split reflects your actual financial partnership.
With default splits, you set this ratio once and never think about it again. Every grocery trip, every dinner out, every shared subscription automatically splits according to your agreed-upon percentages. It's the difference between expense tracking that creates friction and expense tracking that just works.
