Get the exact view you need, instantly

We're excited to introduce a new way to view your balances that puts you in complete control. You can now instantly toggle between viewing balances by groups and by friends, giving you exactly the perspective you need without any extra navigation. Whether you're managing multiple group trips or tracking one-on-one expenses, switching views is now just one click away.

Balance view toggle hero

This new toggle appears right at the top of your balance page, allowing you to seamlessly switch between two powerful organizational modes that each serve different needs in your expense management workflow.

Two perspectives, one powerful interface

The new balance view toggle gives you two distinct ways to organize and understand your shared expenses:

"By Groups" view (Default)

This view organizes your balances around expense groups, making it perfect when you want to see which groups have outstanding balances. Each group shows:

  • The total amount you owe or are owed for that specific group
  • A breakdown of individual friend balances within that group
  • Quick access to view the full group details

By groups view

This is especially powerful when managing multiple group trips, shared household expenses, or project-based spending where context matters more than individual relationships.

"By Friends" view

This view organizes your balances around individual friends, showing you the total relationship with each person across all contexts. Each friend shows:

  • The total amount you owe or are owed across all groups and expenses
  • A breakdown of balances by specific groups or one-on-one expenses
  • Direct settlement options for the entire relationship

By friends view

This view excels when you want to settle up with specific people or understand your overall financial relationship with someone regardless of which groups you share.

Perfect for every expense scenario

The beauty of this toggle is how it adapts to different ways you think about and manage your shared expenses:

Managing group trips

When reviewing expenses from your recent vacation or group trip, switch to "By Groups" view to see exactly what each trip or event cost and who owes what. This keeps everything organized by context, making it easy to track trip-specific balances.

Roommate and household expenses

For ongoing household expenses with roommates, the "By Groups" view helps you see which categories (utilities, groceries, rent) have outstanding balances, while "By Friends" view shows your total relationship with each roommate.

Mixed expense situations

When you have both group expenses and one-on-one expenses with the same people, toggle between views to get different perspectives on the same relationships. See group context when needed, individual totals when settling up.

Settlement workflow

Planning to settle up with friends? Switch to "By Friends" view to see exactly how much you owe or are owed by each person, then use the integrated payment apps to send or request money for the total amount.

How to use the balance view toggle

Using the new toggle is incredibly simple and intuitive:

  1. Navigate to your Balances page (your main homepage when logged in)
  2. Look for the toggle at the top - you'll see "By groups" and "By friends" options with clear icons
  3. Click your preferred view - the page instantly reorganizes to show that perspective
  4. Switch anytime - your preference is remembered, so you can toggle back and forth as needed

The interface is designed to be completely seamless - no page reloads, no waiting, just instant perspective switching that puts you in control of how you view your expenses.

Smart organization that reduces clutter

One of the biggest benefits of the "By Groups" view (which is now the default) is how it reduces visual clutter when you have many shared expenses. Instead of seeing multiple cards for the same friend across different groups, you see one clear card per group with all the relevant information organized underneath.

This is especially helpful if you're someone who:

  • Participates in multiple group trips throughout the year
  • Manages various household expense categories with roommates
  • Splits different types of recurring expenses (utilities, groceries, rent) in separate groups
  • Collaborates on project-based expenses with colleagues or friends

The "By Friends" view remains perfect for when you want to focus on individual relationships and get a complete picture of your financial interactions with specific people.

Designed for mobile and desktop

The toggle works seamlessly across all your devices. Whether you're quickly checking balances on your phone or doing detailed expense management on your computer, the interface adapts perfectly to provide the same smooth switching experience.

The responsive design ensures that both balance view modes look great and function perfectly regardless of your screen size, making expense management convenient wherever you are.

Your workflow, your choice

This new feature represents our commitment to giving you complete control over how you manage shared expenses. We understand that different situations call for different perspectives, and now you have the flexibility to switch between them instantly.

No more navigating between different pages to get the view you need. No more mental gymnastics to understand your balance situation. Just one click to get exactly the perspective that makes sense for what you're trying to accomplish.
