Add discounts to itemized receipts
Share the savings, too
A restaurant takes $10 off your bill, or you use a coupon on a shared grocery shop. The discount lowers what you paid, but your itemized split should reflect that saving too.
You can now add negative line items to receipts in SplitMyExpenses. Enter the discount, choose who shares it, and everyone's totals update alongside the rest of the bill.

A discount is another receipt item
Add a line named Discount, Coupon, or something more specific, then enter a negative amount, such as -$10.
Just like a dish or a grocery item, you choose the people included in that line. A discount shared by everyone reduces everyone's share. A coupon that only applies to your meal can go just to you.
This is especially handy when everyone ordered different things and splitting the final bill equally wouldn't be fair.
A simple example
You ordered $20 of food and Nick ordered $30. The restaurant gives you a $10 discount, and you decide to share the saving equally.
- Your food: $20, less $5 of the discount = $15.
- Nick's food: $30, less $5 of the discount = $25.
- Together: $40, before any tax or tip.
You can see the discount and the updated totals in the same receipt, so it's easy to explain how the bill was split.
How to add a receipt discount
- Open an itemized expense, or scan a receipt to get started.
- Add a receipt item and give it a name, such as Discount.
- Enter the amount with a minus sign.
- Select the people sharing the discount, review the totals, and save.
In the simple receipt editor, the discount is shared equally between the people you select. If you want to divide it differently, switch to Advanced to choose custom percentages, shares, or amounts.
Try receipt discounts the next time a coupon or restaurant offer saves your group some money.
